England Euro 2012 betting: Jack Butland 25/1 to play after John Ruddy withdrawal

Rookie goalkeeper Jack Butland has been called up to the England squad for Euro 2012 after John Ruddy was forced to pull out with a broken finger.

The Birmingham City youngster is 25/1 with Bet365 to play during the European Championship - even though he has yet to make a first-team appearance for his Championship club.

Ruddy, 25, suffered the injury in training on Thursday and while he will still travel with the England squad for Saturday's match against Norway in Oslo, the Norwich goalkeeper has been ruled out of the tournament in Poland and the Ukraine.

Butland, who spent this season on loan at Cheltenham, will now move up from the standby list and join the squad next week ahead of the second warm-up friendly against Belgium.

A statement on the Football Association website read: “The FA can confirm Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy broke his finger in training on Thursday and has been ruled out of UEFA Euro 2012.

“Ruddy was assessed by the England medical staff and will not be able to be part of the tournament. He will travel with the squad to Norway on Friday and watch the game on Saturday evening, but return to his club after arriving back in England.

“Birmingham City goalkeeper Jack Butland, who was previously on the standby list, will join up next week and be part of the squad in preparation for the Belgium game and the tournament in Poland and the Ukraine.”

Bet365 have paid out on Butland making the Euro 2012 squad, while Ruddy is 11/8 to make the 2014 World Cup squad and 8/15 to miss out again.

Bet365 spokesman Steve Freeth said: “Ruddy was our biggest loser on the England squad betting (5/1 in to 1/6) and his loss is Jack Butland’s gain.”
