England Euro 2012 Captain Odds – Roy Hodgson to turn to Steven Gerrard?

England now know who will lead them into Euro 2012 this summer, but the question of who will be captain remains unanswered.

The Football Association made their shock swoop for West Brom boss Roy Hodgson last weekend, and the ex-Inter Milan and Liverpool manager will have to act quickly as he assembles his squad for Ukraine and Poland, with their Euro 2012 opener on Monday, June 11.

The big question is about who will wear the captain’s armband when they step out onto the field for that game. The decision to strip John Terry of the captaincy played a key role in Fabio Capello’s decision to walk out on the Three Lions, and now all eyes will be on who replaces the Chelsea centre-back.

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard is the 6/4 favourite at Coral and he has given his public backing to Hodgson, telling reporters: “Roy's a good manager. I've worked with him before.

“I think he took the Liverpool job at the wrong time but my opinion of Roy hasn't changed before he got the job, whilst he had the job and after it.

“He was very good tactically; very thorough. A great guy; very loyal and honest with the players and that's all we'd ask from him.”

Tottenham midfielder Scott Parker is 2/1 with the same firm, while Manchester City pair Joe Hart and Gareth Barry are 8/1 (StanJames) and 33/1 (Paddy Power) respectively. Veteran Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard is 20/1 (BetVictor) to be made captain for the showdown with France, while club team-mate Terry is 66/1 (SkyBet) to be reinstated by Hodgson.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is reportedly ready to confirm he will be willing to play at Euro 2012, and he is 33/1 (SkyBet) to be handed the captaincy. There had been questions about whether or not Ferdinand would be willing to play alongside Terry, who has been accused of racially abusing the United man’s brother, Anton, during a Premier League match last October, but the centre-back is believed to be ready to declare his availability.

Now it is up to Hodgson to determine who will wear the captain’s armband against France. The 64-year-old knows he already has a big decision to make as he looks to win over sceptical supporters that had been desperate to see Harry Redknapp appointed, and this could go some way to easing some of the unrest.
