Roy Hodgson's men survived a battering over 120 minutes of football as Italy dominated, particularly from the second half of normal time onwards.

But, having held on for spot-kicks, England could not capitalise on Riccardo Montolivo's miss in the shoot-out as Ashley Young and Ashley Cole were the guilty parties on this occasion with Italy coming out on top 4-2 to set up a semi-final showdown against Germany on Thursday.

Daniele De Rossi hit an effort from distance with the outside of his left-foot which beat the dive of Joe Hart and bounced off the post as Italy almost scored in the third minute of the game.

Glen Johnson then went close for England on five minutes but could not get enough power on his effort from a James Milner pass to really trouble Italy keeper Gianluigi Buffon from a couple of yards out.

Italy enjoyed more possession with Andrea Pirlo pulling the strings, while Mario Balotelli always looked a threat. But Danny Welbeck should have done better for England when he fired an effort over the bar from the edge of the area on 32 minutes.

Balotelli was denied a goal on 41 minutes when he got on the end of Antonio Cassano's head down, but Joleon Lescott's vital intervention took his close-range effort over the bar.

De Rossi, Balotelli and Montolivo all spurned great chances to score for Italy in the second half as England somehow took the game into extra-time.

The Italians continued to press for a winner in the extra half-hour with Alessandro Diamanti’s cross hitting the outside of the far post on 101 minutes, before Antonio Nocerino had a header correctly ruled out for offside with five minutes remaining.

England might have felt it was their night going into the penalties and, while Rooney and Steven Gerrard converted, Young and Cole missed. Balotelli, Pirlo, Nocerino and Alessandro Diamanti all scored as justice was done with Italy going through.

Italy are 11/2 to win Euro 2012, while Germany can be backed at 13/8, Spain are 13/8 and Portugal 11/2.
