Denmark v Portugal betting tips - Great Danes to thwart Ronaldo

Denmark are set to maintain their surprise bid for a Euro 2012 quarter-final place by holding Portugal in their second Group B match in Lviv.

Match odds
Portugal – 21/20 (Paddy Power)
Draw – 5/2 (Bet365)
Denmark – 33/10 (BetVictor)

Few people would have predicted Denmark would beat the Netherlands in their opening game but they did, riding their luck after Michael Krohn-Dehli had opened the scoring in the first half.

It means that if Morten Olsen’s side can take a point against the Portuguese they will be in great shape to qualify for the last eight – a prospect which, again, only those with a crystal ball could surely have seen coming before the tournament began.

For the Denmark players, this clash will probably be a case of ‘more of the same, please’ from Olsen as containing tactics are likely against a side with similar attributes to the Dutch.

Individual flair is great but it counts for little unless it is hooked up within a team ethic, as the Dutch found to their cost in Kharkiv.

The Danes found themselves playing against a group of superb footballers who struggled to harness their ability into an effective, cohesive unit.

And it could be the same with Portugal, whose approach again failed to bring out the best of Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Germany.

Ronaldo yet again found himself unable to repeat his Real Madrid exploits on the international stage and the side he captains now have their backs to the wall in their quest to claim a quarter-final berth.

There is recent history between these teams, of course, for they contested the same qualifying group which Denmark topped, leaving Portugal to secure their place in the Ukraine through the play-offs.

Each side bagged a home win when they met in the last two Octobers, Denmark prevailing 2-1 in 2011 with that man Krohn-Dehli again opening the scoring before Nicklas Bendtner made it 2-0 and Ronaldo bagged a consolation.

Twelve months earlier, Nani had notched a double and Ronaldo added a third in a 3-1 success for Portugal when a Ricardo Carvalho own goal had put Denmark on the scoresheet.

This time it’s on neutral soil, to which the Danes appear to have adapted better so far,  and with a point being a perfectly acceptable outcome for them, a low-scoring draw looks the most likely result.

Recommendation: Draw (5/2 Bet365)
