The firm closed their book today with record six figure liabilities on Christmas snow bets which were registered up and down the country.The White Christmas bet has been in existence for 30 years now but this year has seen turnover exceed all previous levels with the widest number of towns and cities given individual odds.At the last show every Scottish location was odds-on for snow with Lerwick the shortest price at 1/3.Most English locations were 6/4 or shorter with Norwich and London both 5/4. Cardiff is the longest price for snow in the UK at 7/4, representing a huge cut in odds since all locations were on offer at 6/1 or bigger in advance of the cold snap. 95% of bets were reported after the first snowfall as Ladbrokes customers latched onto the idea that a White Christmas was on the cards.The vast increase in bets was also attributed to the fact that the weather had decimated the racing and sporting calendar, with many punters staking money reserved for cancelled events on the prospect of more snow. A record number of bets were also registered via telephone and the internet as many customers were also unable to reach their nearest Ladbrokes shop.In order for the bet to be registered a single snow flake as registered by the BWS has to fall within the 24 hour period on Christmas Day.
