Tony McCoy Backed to Win BBC Sports Personality Award

Tony McCoy aboard Grand National winner Don't Push It

Winning Grand National jockey now third favourite in award betting

Following his success in this year’s Grand National, Tony McCoy has been cut to 6/1 third favourite to win this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year award by Coral.

Despite the fact that the gongs aren’t handed out until December, there is goring support for the champion jockey, especially as the other main contenders continue to slip-up.

Andy Murray is still 7/2 favourite, although the Scot has struggled for form since his Australian Open final appearance, while Wayne Rooney (4/1) has seen his hopes of winning a major trophy at club level dashed over the last week.

When leading the US Masters on Saturday, Lee Westwood was as low as 3/1 for the BBC award, but another major defeat for the Englishman has seen him drift to 16/1.

Coral spokesman Gary Burton told Bettingpro:

"Although still more than eight months away, the gamble on McCoy continues and his chances of winning were strengthened further with Westwood and Poulter failing to win the Masters”
