The King's Speech swept the board at the BAFTAs but will it do the same at the Oscars?

The King’s Speech ruled supreme at last night’s BAFTAs, scooping seven awards and it has consequently strengthened further as favourite to win Best Picture at the Oscars with Sky Bet slashing the odds to 1/6 from 1/4.

One of the few categories in which The King’s Speech missed out was direction and Tom Hooper has been lengthened to 5/4 by Sky Bet (from 4/5) to be honoured at the Oscars, while The Social Network helmsman David Fincher has been cut to 8/13 (from 10/11).

Sky Bet’s Oscars betting expert Helen Jacob told Bettingpro:

“After winning the Directors Guild award, Tom Hooper’s odds of following up at the Oscars took a nose dive as they are a very reliable barometer but now that he has missed out at the Baftas his odds have drifted. The Social Network’s David Fincher is in pole position once again and it looks as though we may see the top two Oscars split between the two films.”

Geoffrey Rush, who plays King George VI’s unorthodox speech therapist in The King’s Speech, caused an upset by beating Christian Bale to the best supporting actor gong and the veteran Australian actor has been cut to 7/2 (from 9/2) to take the top honour on February 27.

The King’s Speech won all the acting categories in which it contended but Helena Bonham Carter remains a 7/1 shot for Oscar glory, with Melissa Leo, who was not shortlisted for the BAFTA, 1/3 short priced favourite to add the Oscar to her Golden Globe and SAG awards.
