Ryan Giggs has been the subject of a major plunge to be crowned Sports Personality of the Year after being named in a 10-strong shortlist for this year's award.

The Manchester United winger picked up the 2009 PFA Player of the Year gong after collecting an amazing 11th Premier League winner's medal with the Red Devils.

But he shows no signs of resting on his laurels, scoring his 100th top-flight goal for United in Saturday's 4-1 win at Portsmouth just a day before his 36th birthday.

The Welshman is the only footballer still left in the frame and several internet campaigns have been set up supporting his cause.

Giggs has been backed from 20/1 to 8/1 with William Hill, there has been the same price reduction at Ladbrokes and Coral halved his odds from 20/1 to 10/1.

Formula One star Jenson Button is 8/11 at best with totesport to top the voting, with athletics ace Jessica Ennis 9/2 at Betfred and heavyweight world champion boxer David Haye 8/1 at the last-named firm.
