Russian Grannies proving popular on Eurovision

The Eurovision Song Contest final begins shortly in Baku with StanJames.com reporting money for the Russian grannies who are top-price 11/2 second favourites to take the crown.

StanJames' Rory Jiwani told Bettingpro "We've made a point of taking on the top two in the market, Sweden and Russia, over the last few days. Sweden are 5/4 favourites although we believe the song 'Euphoria' by Loreen does not stand out massively from a large number of dance anthems. Meanwhile, the Russian grannies have been extremely popular today. We can't see what is essentially a novelty act taking the title, but they are now quite a big loser in the book. We're each-way one-quarter odds four places before the start and we'll hold that until at least the first few acts before going one-fifth three places in-play.

"Serbia have been backed and are now 15/2 but Italy have drifted out to 12/1. Hosts Azerbaijan and the UK are still our worst results but Engelbert Humperdinck has also been backed to have a nightmare. No opening act has won since 1984 and punters think 'The Hump' will either do very well or very badly indeed. He's 16/1 to win outright and 11/8 to finish in the top 10. The UK has been well-backed to score less than 78 points at 13/8, and 'The Hump' is now 5/2 to finish 21st or worse having been available at 7/1 earlier in the week. The UK is also very unpopular in match bets against Germany, Ireland and Greece.

"Punters are also backing Spain to receive four or more maximum points scores at 10/1. We also go 13/2 that a nation receives the dreaded 'nil points' and 1/14 that it doesn't happen. Most of our markets will still be available for the first hour so there's plenty of opportunity to get involved in a great betting heat which often bears little relation to the actual quality of the songs."
