Oscars 2008 Betting

Anna Richardson - 22 Jan 2008

Sky Bet are tipping a British double at the Oscars with Daniel Day-Lewis 2/9 to take the best lead actor gong and veteran English actress Julie Christie 1/3 favourite to scoop lead actress honours. The last time Brits scooped best actor and actress Oscars honours was in 1964.

Sky Bet’s entertainment manager, Helen Jacob, said “Daniel Day-Lewis looks a shoo-in for the lead actor, and Julie Christie will be hard to beat for best actress honours. And with Atonement picking up a best picture nod, it promises to be a great Oscar year for British talent!

Atonement, which has also bagged 14 BAFTA nominations, is flying the flag for Britain in the best picture category and is Sky Bet’s 3/1 second favourite behind the 8/11 frontrunner ‘No Country For Old Men’.  Its directors, the Oscar-winning Coen Brothers, are 11/10 favourites to be named best directors.

Further British hopes lie with Saoirse Ronan and Tilda Swinton in the best supporting actress category with Sky Bet quoting then both as 8/1 shots.

Due to the ongoing Writers’ Guild of America strike there is still some reservation on whether the ceremony will take place but Sky Bet does not envisage this scenario, quoting 1/10 that it goes ahead as planned and 5/1 that it is cancelled.
