Oscars 2012 betting - Iron Lady outsider for Best Picture Oscar

Meryl Streep is the even money favourite to win the Best Actress Oscar for The Iron Lady (credit: bulhufas.es)
The Artist looks like the film to beat at this year´s Oscars but Meryl Streep should have the Best Actress award sewn up for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady .

The 2012 Oscars may be over six months away but already the PR machine is in motion, with Harvey Weinstein already lookig ahead to which films he will be campaigning in the autumn and the one which looks set to be strongly pushed is The Iron lady.

The Margaret Thatcher biopic, which features Meryl Streep in the starring role as the former UK Prime Minister, reeks of potential Oscar nominations. Streep is currently an even money shot at Victor Chandler to win Best Actress, while the film itself is 8/1 to win the Best Picture award.

Streep´s most likely challenger to the Best Actress gong is Michelle Williams, who takes on the role of another of the 20th Century´s most famous women, Marilyn Monroe, in My Week With Marilyn. The film, directed by Simon Curtis centres around the iconic actress´ friendship with young Englishman Colin Clark, during the filming of ´The Prince and the Showgirl´. While the film itself may be a 7/1 shot to win the Best Picture award, Williams, who narrowly missed out on an Oscar last year for Blue Valentine, will be a strong contender for Best Actress and can be backed at 6/1.

The Best Actor award looks far more open, with Leonardo Di Caprio the 5/2 favourite for his role as J. Edgar Hoover in Clint Eastwood´s ´J.Edgar´. Di Caprio has been nominated for the Best Acotr Oscar twice, for his roles in The Aviator and Blood Diamond and this could well be the year when the Academy finally recognise the 36-year-old.

Di Caprio´s main competitor has also been nominated twice but overlooked for the Best Actor award. George Clooney´s talents were recognised in 2007 for Michael Clayton and 2009 for Up In The Air. He is 7/2 to be given the nod this year for his portrayal of Matt King in arthouse film ´The Descendents´.

The biggest award of them all, Best Picture, looks set to go to a man who has a veritable collection of statues. Steven Spielberg has been nominated for a total of seven Best Picture Oscars and six Best Director gongs, winning a total of three. He leads the betting in both categories for World War One epic ´War Horse´. The film, which is due to be released in December, is 6/4 to win Best Picture and it looks likely to do so.
