Daniel Day-Lewis is the hottest ever favourite to win this year’s Best Actor Oscar according to bookie Paddy Power. The ‘There Will Be Blood’ star is just 1/12 to pick up his second Best Actor Oscar, with his nearest rival Johnny Depp a distant 10/1.
However, Day-Lewis has been pipped to the post at The Oscars before. In 2003 Day-Lewis was 1/3 favourite to win Best Actor for ‘Gangs of New York’ only for the then unknown Adrien Brody to take a surprise win.
For those fancying a longer odds bet on Day-Lewis may be tempted by Paddy Power’s 13/8 that the winner of Best Actor cries during his acceptance speech. The luvvies love a bit of emotion at the best of times and Day-Lewis has repeatedly been welling up at other award ceremonies over Heath Ledger recently.
Other specials available over at Paddypower include 20/1 that the record for longest acceptance speech is broken (5 minutes 30 secs) and 10/1 for any nominated actress to have a wardrobe malfunction. In the race for the White House Paddy Power are offering bets on which politician gets the first namecheck on stage. It’s 1/2 for the fashionable Barack Obama and 6/4 for Hillary Clinton.
Julie Christie is the 4/9 favourite for Best Actress, thus making her favoured designer Tanya Gill the 8/15 favourite in Paddy Power’s ‘Who designs the Best Actress’s dress’ betting. Cate Blanchett is 50/1 to win an unprecedented Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress double.
Sharon McHugh, Paddy Power’s showbiz betting expert, said: “Betting since the nominations were announced suggests that we shouldn’t be expecting too many surprises at this year’s Oscars – although there’s usually one if punters are lucky enough to find it. If that’s the case then seasoned Oscar viewers may have more fun betting on the winners falling on stage or the Best Actor crying like only a true luvvie can.”
Meanwhile Lindsay Lohan and Eddie Murphy look set to go head to head for this year’s Razzie’s. Lohan’s ‘I Know Who Killed Me’ is the odds on favourite at 1/3 for worst film followed by Murphy’s Norbit at 9/2 whilst Lohan and Murphy are also up for Worst Actress and Actor at 1/6 and 6/4 respectively.
