The King's Speech leads Oscar 2011 betting
It has not yet been released in the UK and Ireland but already Tom Hooper’s The Kings Speech is being hotly tipped to win Best Picture at the 83rd Academy Awards.
The movie, which tells the story of King George VI of Britain, his impromptu ascension to the throne and his speech difficulty, is now just 11/8 with
Paddy Power to win Best Picture having been slashed from an opening 14/1 in September.
Paddy Power also make British actor Colin Firth, who plays the stammering King, their 1/3 favourite to win Best Actor.
The full list of Oscar nominations will not be released until January 25 but interest surrounding the major categories has been fierce and Paddy Power have now identified the early hot favourites to walk away with a golden statue!
In other categories, The Social Network’s David Fincher is the 6/4 favourite to win Best Director; Helena Bonham Carter is the 15/8 favourite to win Best Supporting Actress for her impressive portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in The King’s Speech while US actress Annette Bening is tipped to pick up the Best Actress accolade at 13/8.
Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power told Bettingpro: “Oscar buzz has already begun. All the chat seems to be for The King’s Speech but it is worth remembering that the Oscars are never straight forward - this time last year it was Avatar that was hotly tipped to win the Oscar for Best Picture only to lose out to The Hurt Locker in the end!”
