Nobel Prize in Literature odds – Adonis and Tomas Transtromer favourites

The 2011 Nobel Prize in Literature could be won by a Syrian poet, although Tomas Transtromer could go one better than last year

Syrian poet Adonis is the bookies favourite to win the 2011 Nobel Prize in literature according to Ladbrokes.

The 81 year old Goethe Prize winner and perennial shortlist candidate appears a worthy favourite from Swede Tomas Transtromer at 9/2, who was unlucky not to win the Prize last year as favourite.

Irish novelist and screenwriter John Banville is a 25/1 shot after winning the prestigious Franz Kafka Prize this year which has often served up several Nobel winners in the past. Cult figure Bob Dylan is a 100/1 outsider.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes told Bettingpro: "After hitting the woodwork last year we think Transtromer has a superb chance of atoning for defeat. Adonis has been a permanent fixture on the shortlist in the past and the odds suggest this could be his year."

He added: "Whilst we expect Dylan to have his backers it would represent a major shock and a costly one for us if he walked away with the prize."
