Laura Coleman , better known as Miss England 2008, is a massive 99-1 on Betfair to win the Miss World contest in Johannesburg tomorrow night.

The 22-year-old from Melton Mowbray, home of the pork pie, finds herself well behind in the betting and looks set for a long night.  Miss Spain is the best-priced contestant from the European Union at 15-1, suggesting that judges and punters alike might prefer a paella to a porky.

Meanwhile, the other British nations are set to fare even worse with Miss Scotland at 119-1 and Miss Wales a huge 199-1.

Leading the field is Miss Russia (odds 9-4) and punters clearly see her Siberian upbringing as far better preparation for the cold stares in the dressing room than the more tranquil setting of the English countryside.

Betfair spokesman Michael Robb commented: “It looks like the trip to South Africa for the three home nation stunners will be a fruitless one if the betting is anything to go by.  It’s nice to see Melton Mowbray producing yet another tasty dish but it would appear that our English rose is being shunned by the punters.

“Hopes of a winner from the European Union lie firmly with Miss Spain, the only EU contestant with any chance of batting her eyelids in anger and walking away with the title.”
