Massive gamble on Tony McCoy winning BBC Sports Personality of the Year

Will AP triumph thanks to Ladbrokes? (credit: Paolo Camera)
Ladbrokes are behind the legendary jockey – despite taking a record number of bets on him

Punters and Ladbrokes have united to throw their full support behind jump jockey Tony McCoy's bid to be crowned Sports Personality of the Year.

The bookies report McCoy to be the best backed candidate in the entire history of the BBC award - with his odds now cut to just 4/6 favourite.

Ladbrokes have also concluded their month-long campaign to support the 15-time champion jockey.

Spokesman David Williams explained to Bettingpro: "We've had a great time in our shops with our exclusive Tony McCoy Week and our online viral campaign has gone down a storm. Never before have we been cheering on an odds-on favourite so loudly.

"If AP wins we'll lose a pretty packet on the night but we'll charge those losses to the Marketing budget. It'll pay for itself many times over if racing receives the national exposure it craves.

"McCoy has filled the wallets of millions of punters down the years with his heroics in the saddle. He's done it for them and now the punters seem keen to do it for him. He's been backed off the boards."
