Cycling star Mark Cavendish has been name BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2011.

The 26-year-old Manxman was crowned World Road Race Champion and won the Tour De France Green jersey during a sensational year, and that was enough to earn him the votes ahead of golfer Darren Clarke and athlete Mo Farah.

Cavendish, who won five stages during the Tour de France, is only the third cyclist to win this award after Tommy Simpson in 1965 and Sir Chris Hoy in 2008.

England’s Ashes-winning circket team were named Team Of The Year and coach Andy Flower was named Coach Of The Tear, while world number one Novak Djokovic was named Overseas Sports Personality Of The Year after a stunning year in which he won three of the four Grand Slam tournaments.

Five-time Olympic champion Sir Steve Redgrave was awarded a Lifetime Achievement award, while former jockey Bob Champion received the Helen Rollason Award.
