Mark Cavendish won this year’s Sport’s Personality of the Year to leave bookmakers William Hill with a headache.

Cavendish had been backed in from an initial 66/1 at the start of the year all the way in to 1/3 at the start of play on Thursday night.

The biggest bet placed for Cavendish was an online bet from Coventry amounting to £7,500 at 8/15, although one lucky William Hill punter managed to get £30 on him at 66/1 netting a cool £2010.

Hill’s spokesman Joe Crilly told Bettingpro.com: “We have taken a bit of a hammering, with Sports Personality of the Year taking a five figure sum off us just before Christmas.

“But Cav’s performances this year have surpassed anything ever achieved by a British cyclist and we do not begrudge him this victory.”

Cavendish is 8/1 joint second favourite to win next year’s award behind Jessica Ennis at 6/1 and level with Rebecca Adlington.
