Wiggins, who is currently bidding to become Britain’s first ever winner of the Tour de France, is 3/1 with Ladbrokes to win the award later this year, with Jessica Ennis 7/2 ahead of her attempt to win Heptathlon gold at the 2012 Olympics in London.

Andy Murray is third on the list at 7/1 after he came up short in his bid to end Britain’s wait for a men’s champion at Wimbledon. The Scot became the first British male to reach the final in over 70 years, but he suffered a heart-breaking defeat to Roger Federer and that could end his chances of winning the BBC gong – although there is still the US Open to come!

Also available at 7/1 is 5,000m runner Mo Farah, who competes at this summer’s Olympics, with fellow Olympians Ben Ainslie and Rebecca Adlington 12/1 and 20/1 respectively. Fellow Team GB members Victoria Pendleton, Chris Hoy and Tom Daley are all 33/1, along with F1 star Lewis Hamilton and golf ace Rory McIlroy.

However, there is still so much more ahead on the sporting calendar and it could take just one moment of brilliance to turn these odds on their head.
