David Fincher's The Social Network looks set to sweep the boards at the 2011 Academy Awards

After scooping four of the six nominated awards at Sunday’s Golden Globes, The Social Network has catapulted itself into favourite position to be this year’s ultimate Oscar scooper.

Paddy Power are tipping David Fincher’s acclaimed drama to walk away with as many as six golden statues having had an impressive season so far scooping prestigious awards like The Critics Choice and The Golden Globe. However, as previous years have proven, Oscar night could be a different ball game as the blockbuster goes head to head with Tom Hooper’s The King’s Speech.

Colin Firth’s outstanding performance as the stuttering King George VI has earned him hot odds of 1/16 to be crowned Best Actor in a Leading Role.

In other categories, The Social Network’s David Fincher is the 1/10 favourite to win Best Director; Harvard grad’ Natalie Portman is the 1/7 favourite to win Best Actress for her role in Black Swan while British actress Helena Bonham Carter is amongst the frontrunners to pick up the Best Supporting Actress accolade at 9/4.

The full list of Oscar nominations will not be released until January 25.

Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power told Bettingpro:

“The Social Network is well and truly back in the driving seat after dominating The Golden Globes but it’s worth remembering that the Oscars are never straight forward and movie fans are always guaranteed at least one shock winner on the night - this time last year it was Avatar that was hotly tipped to win the Oscar for Best Picture only to lose out to The Hurt Locker in the end!”
