The 2011 Man Booker Prize winner will be announced this evening and Julian Barnes could face competition from Carol Birch according to the latest odds

Carol Birch has been well backed for the Man Booker prize in the day leading up to the announcement according to Ladbrokes.

The bookies report an eleventh hour gamble on the second favourite who is now into 11/4 with favourite Julian Barnes also well supported at 6/4.

Esi Edugyan's 'Half Blood Blues' is cut to 7/2 having been 11/2 when the shortlist was announced while A.D Miller's 'Snowdrops' has failed to attract a single bet over £10 at this stage.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes told Bettingpro: "We saw huge sums for Barnes before the shortlist was revealed but it's now all about Birch. Edugyan is also popular while Miller has failed to attract any proper money."

Ladbrokes latest betting

Julian Barnes - The Sense of an Ending 6/4

Carol Birch - Jamrach's Menagerie 11/4

Esi Edugyan - Half Blood Blues 7/2

Stephen Kelman - Pigeon English 5/1

Patrick deWitt - The Sisters Brothers 8/1

A.D. Miller - Snowdrops 10/1
