A window cleaner from Staffordshire is on the brink of a jackpot prize as Bright Redcliffe, one of only two dogs he owns and trains, lines up in the Williamhill.com Greyhound Derby final at Wimbledon on Saturday evening.

One year ago, part-time greyhound trainer John McGoldrick could only dream about the heady heights of Derby glory when purchasing Bright Redcliffe (or Sammy as he fondly known at home) for a relatively meagre sum. But he soon realised he had a good thing on his hands when Sammy began racking up the wins and reached the semi-finals of competitions at Henlow and Romford and now the whirlwind year for the small-time handler has culminated in being part of the final six for greyhound racing's most prestigious prize.

Bright Redcliffe will sport the blue jacket of trap two on Saturday and his big time adversaries will include some of the best known dogs in training, including track record-holder Taylors Sky and Irish raiders Barefoot Bullet and Razldazl Gorgeous' George.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ''John McGoldrick is quite literally a champion for the underdog. On Saturday he faces off against Greyhound Racing's big guns, with a live chance of taking the Derby prize and a glittering career at stud for his prize pooch Bright Redcliffe. Instead of shining the double glazing of Burton-upon-Trent, he could well be polishing the Derby Trophy come Sunday morning.''

John stands-off against five-time winning Derby legend Charlie Lister - himself on the brink of becoming the sport's winningmost Derby trainer - and Irish training royalty Dolores Ruth and Paul Hennessy. A true minnow in against the big fish. Bright Redcliffe has a chance to join the Derby roll of honour alongside the likes of legendary dogs Mick the Miller and Westmead Hawk.

Window cleaner John's modest investment has bought him opportunities beyond his wildest dreams, but more importantly, a new best friend, and should Sammy reach the line first on Saturday, there could be a few mucky window-panes around the Staffordshire area for a while.

Williamhill.com Greyhound Derby Latest Betting: 6-4 Taylors Sky, 11-4 Barefoot Bullet, 7-2 Razldazl George, 8-1 Westmead Guru, 14-1 Bright Redcliffe, Cloheena Cash
