Liz McNair’s bitch was Oaks champion last year, but she hasn’t been quite as impressive this time around and only just managed to come through her semi-final to get to tonight’s final. Her pedigree suggests that she is still the dog to beat, but Shaws Dilemma is only a lukewarm favourite at 7/4 with Coral. That is because there are a number of up and coming greyhounds out to steal Shaws Dilemma’s Oaks crown. Sylvanna Crystal, who is a 7/1 shot at Boylesports, was a semi-final winner and Bernie Doyle’s bitch looks bred for success. She may, however, have peaked too early when winning that semi-final.The dog she beat in that race was Freedom Emma, who was runner-up to Shaws Dilemma last year. She was disappointing when losing to Sylvanna Crystal, but trainer Richard Yeates would argue that her opponent benefited from a good draw at a rail-runners racetrack. Yeates has gradually been working on Freedom Emma’s strength, putting weight on her since her comeback and the theory is that she will be at her absolute best for tonight’s race. At 3/1 with Stan James, she makes a lot of appeal.Of the other contenders, Rebellious Queen makes the most appeal, at 5/1 with Bet365. She has a reasonable draw in mid-pack and is a rapidly improving puppy. If she doesn’t manage to win this year, she is sure to go close and will be one to look out for in future Oaks races.Snowy Skye was the surprise winner of Shaws Dilemma’s semi-final and therefore can’t be discounted. She will have plenty of support at 8/1 with Bet365, but could find it tough to repeat what many are considering a one-off victory. The outsider of the pack is Big Pair, who is a 14/1 shot at William Hill. While anything can happen in a greyhounds race, it would be a massive shock were she to triumph at Wimbledon tonight, against such a high quality field.
