It looked for the whole world that Fear Zafonic was finally going to end the trap one hoodoo in the final – there has been no red box winner since the Derby moved to Wimbledon in 1985 – and Betfair punters agreed, with the greyhound being backed at 1-100 as he scorched clear.

There was £1,500 matched at the minimum price alone, and plenty more at 1-50 upwards.

But Kinda Ready, who drifted to 49-1 on Betfair pre-race and was matched at 179-1 in the ante-post market, hit overdrive on the short run-in to collar Fear Zafonic. That was good news for the punter who got the princely sum of 50p matched on the winner at 299-1 in running.
