Greyhound racing is one of the most popular sports on which to bet, largely because of how straightforward it is to understand.

Unlike its equine equivalent, there is a refreshing simplicity to betting on greyhound racing because the sport tends to follow a pattern.

Every day there are lots of greyhound racing meetings taking place around Britain and you can also bet on the dogs with the online bookmakers elsewhere in the world, for example Australia via your PC, tablet or mobile device.

To the untrained eye, one greyhound race can look very much like another. They tend to be staged over the same kind of distance, taking 20-30 seconds to be run, with six dogs in each and wearing the same coloured jackets that correspond to the trap number from which they start: red for trap 1, blue for trap 2, white for trap 3, black for trap 4, orange for trap 5 and black & white stripes for trap 6.

Greyhound betting is far more than just a lottery

But while some people think greyhound racing is a lottery as the dogs chase an electric hare around the track, there is much more to it than that - which should be taken into account if you want to make big money from betting on this sport.

For a start, the greyhounds are categorised according to their ability and can be moved up and down the grades based upon their performances – the better they do, the higher up the ladder they will climb and vice versa.

Part of the knack of successful greyhound betting is identifying which dogs will thrive when they are given a change in grade.

Plus, there are other aspects of form that should be factored in, such as times clocked in previous races, and even how long it takes a dog to reach the first bend to predict whether it will meet trouble in running. Trap allocation is also important as some greyhounds prefer to race wide or close to the rail.

Place multiple bets on the greyhounds

There are usually a dozen or more races at a greyhound meeting and these present plenty of opportunities to back a winner, or even to land a multiple bet such as a double, treble or accumulator.

Another highly popular type of bet is a forecast where instead of just trying to find the winner, you have to predict the first and second with the reward of greater returns.

Make sure you visit Bettingpro.com on a regular basis to get the latest betting tips on all the big races, such as the Greyhound Derby which takes place in June.

Races such as the Greyhound Derby have a lively ante-post market which allows punters to pick out a dog at big odds before the heats begin and hopefully follow it all the way through to the final at Wimbledon.

We will also keep you informed of money-back offers, for example those the bookmakers run when greyhound racing is shown live by Sky Sports on midweek evenings, with money back if your dog is beaten narrowly being a popular one.
