On Tuesday 7th September, the 2010 Championship League Darts kicks off, with the top eight players in the world getting the first bite of the cherry to book their place in the Winners Group.

It’s a tournament with a quirky format, with the top 29 players in the order of merit all competing at various stages to book their place in the final stage.

Unsurprisingly, it’s Phil Taylor who is favourite at 4/7 (Blue Square) to win this event, although the format means that he has arguably less chance of winning this tournament than he would do in a straight knockout.

Last year, it was Colin Osbourne who beat him in the final, although Sporting Bet are prepared to lay the holder at odds of 80/1, perhaps because he’s only in Group 3 and will get just six chances to reach the Winners Group.

The winner is likely to come from Group 1 and that includes the likes of James Wade (12/1 Paddy Power), Adrian Lewis (40/1 Bet Fred) and Colin Lloyd (40/1 Sporting Bet).

Raymond van Barneveld will have to bide his time as the Dutchman is in Group 4, although he’s among the favourites (12/1 Blue Square), while Australian Simon Whitlock is 10/1 with William Hill to be the champion.
