Tour de France favourites - Saturday

The Tour de France moves into the lower slopes of the mountain stages.

These come in the form of the Massif Central, a Mountain range in central France.

The stage finishes at the top of the ski station resort town. Climbing to 1275 metres above sea level, it's not super tough, but prior to that there are three other climbs, with the notable category two Col De La Criox Saint Robert sitting at 1451metres.

Don't be surprised if a few of the favourites go on the attack.

The Favourites

Alberto Contador
The defending champion showed on stage four that he's willing to launch an attack at any point if the timing is right.

He trails most of his main rivals by over a minute, so will be keen to make up time when and where possible.

He also has the ability to keep surging on a long climb, which can hurt his rivals.

Cadel Evans
The Australian is in fine form and on that note should be able to go with almost anyone on this climb.

He had the measure of Contador and Co on stage four to claim victory, so there's no reason why he can't produce again.

Robert Gesink
The Dutchman trails the yellow by just 20 seconds and although I rate him as one of the favourites for the overall title, he may be able to give his opponents the slip in the final few kilometres as they focus on each other.

Andreas Kloden
Along with Evans, Kloden has had high finishes on stages so far.

Currently sitting in 5th place at just 10 seconds, and as much as he is a threat for the overall crown, he's also one that could give the rest the slip in the final 1-2 kilometres as they worry about each other.

Outsiders

Damiano Cunego
The Italian has been in good form of late, having a great Tour De Suisse and only being beaten in the final stage for overall honours.

Packs a mean punch in an uphill sprint finish.

Could be the perfect climb for him.

Simon Gerrans
The Australian riding for Team Sky was always going to have limited chances for personal glory at this year's race.

That was until team-mate Bradley Wiggins crashed out today in spectacular fashion.

He'll be let off the leash now by team management and they know he can win these sorts of stages.

He claimed a stage win in the 2008 edition, which similarly wound up with a mountain-top finish.

The Smokey

Thomas Voeckler
We saw the Frenchman go on the attack in stage six, only to be swallowed up in the dying stages.

This won't curb his enthusiasm though. He is a super opportunist who keeps putting himself out there, so watch out for him.

In Summary

This is where it gets tricky, as two things could happen in this stage.

1. Break goes early and stays away to win the stage. Enter Gerrans and Voeckler, as this is right up their alley.

2. Break goes early, but gets caught and we see a battle between all of the favourites.

If the latter is the case, I'd actually back Evans to claim a second stage win. His form is that good at the moment and his strength the other day on the Mur was very impressive.

The other one to put something on would be Cunego. It's not a super tough climb, but tough enough for the Italian to beat all around him.

I'd put a little on Contador also, as despite being marked heavily, he could still get the win.

Kloden is worth backing as well given he's been around a long time. Experience counts, but he'll have to win solo.

Yellow Jersey

Expect to see the jersey change hands, and all going to plan it should go on the shoulders of Evans.

We won't however see much of a shakeup with the favourites, but we may see a couple drop out of the picture.
