Tour de France Stage Nine Betting Tips

Simon Gerrans (credit: Wikipedia)
With seven categorised climbs, ranging from three to eight kilometres in length, Stage Nine of the Tour de France is the perfect stage for a breakaway. The opportunists will come out to play, but don't be surprised if the overall contenders are in the mix also.

The Favourites

Simon Gerrans

Has to be given another chance here.  The stage leans towards a breakaway opportunity and the shorter climbs will be good for the Australian. Now that he's been let off the leash, I expect him to go on the attack.

Luis-Leon Sanchez

The Spaniard has won twice before at the Tour, is pure class and days like this one he will have pencilled in a long time ago. The question is, will his team Rabobank let him go for personal stage honours rather than hang back in support of team leader Robert Gesink?

Anthony Charteau

Won the overall Polka Dot jersey category last year. Will be looking to launch defence on this stage. With points up for grabs on seven climbs, I expect the Frenchman to be at the front. What remains in question is whether or not he'll save enough energy for the finale to go for the stage.

Thomas Voeckler

Similar to Gerrans, should be considered for this stage. It suits his style and he's strong enough to lead a small break then attack for a solo win.

Outsiders

Alexander Vinokourov

Another rider that the course suits well. He trails overall by just 32 seconds though, so if he is going to win the stage it will have to be an attack in the dying stages, which he showed today he is more than capable

Damiano Cunego

Another rider who trails the overall by just over a minute. If he's going to win, it will be in the last uphill push to the line.

The Smokey

There are many! But my pick is... Rigoberto Uran. The Colombian had a great ride on the Mur on stage four, finishing a very credible 4th place. Like his team-mate Gerrans he'll be now free to go on the attack since team leader Wiggins has withdrawn. He trails by over four minutes so could be given some leeway.

In Summary

It's a tough one to pick, but if I was going to bet on a rider, I think Simon Gerrans would be a good one to go for. The course suits him and he trails by enough not to bother the overall contenders too much. If he can get away in a break it may work. It's worth putting a little something on Voeckler, as well as Sanchez. The other way to look at it is, if it comes down to the final climb and the peloton are together, then I'd have a punt on Vinokourov or even Cunego. They're both in great form and are due to launch for a win!
