Wiggins, who was backed as low as 15.0 on Betfair to win the yellow jersey, has a suspected fractured left collarbone after a crash involving up to 15 riders only 40km from the finish.

The triple Olympic gold medallist and leader of Team Sky unsuccessfully attempted to remount and formally abadoned the Tour from the back of an ambulance.

Sean Yates, Team Sky's sports director, announced over the radio: "Guys, it's over for Bradley, we think he's got a broken collarbone."

Chris Horner of team RadioShack and Remi Pauriol (FDJ) also came down as the peloton splintered.

Alberto Contador remains the favourite to win the race at 2.18 with Andy Schleck available at 3.05.
