Tour de France 2012 final stage betting - Wiggins and Cavendish set for glory

The final stage of the Tour de France looks set to be a clean sweep of British glory as Bradley Wiggins prepares to clinch overall victory on the Champs Elysees.

Wiggins’ dominance scaled new heights on stage 19, the individual time trial, as he clocked a time 1min 16secs faster than his closest rival, Team Sky colleague Chris Froome, to extend his lead to 3mins 21secs.

Only a devastating crash on the final 120km test from Rambouillet to Paris can prevent Wiggins from becoming the first Briton to win the tour and Froome finishing second.

It’s a remarkable achievement considering no British rider had ever ended up on the podium before.

And the duo could be joined by their team-mate Mark Cavendish in taking the plaudits in Paris as the 2011 BBC Sports Personality of the Year is the odds-on favourite with SportingBet to win the stage.

The Manxman has gained a mere two victories so far in the 2012 Tour de France having had to sacrifice his personal goals as a sprinter to aid Wiggins’ bid for overall success.

“It’s like playing Wayne Rooney in defence,” was Cavendish’s assessment of his role. “I’m part of a team but not doing what I can as an individual rider.

“You can still win the match but you can’t do your part of it to the best of your ability.”

However, to extend the analogy, Cavendish can look forward to taking a penalty on the Champs-Elysees where Andre Greipel looks to be his main rival in the sprint.

The final stage traditionally tends to be something of a victory parade that rarely features a successful breakaway and that will play right into Cavendish’s hands.

Tour de France Stage 20 betting (best odds available):

  4/6 Mark Cavendish (SportingBet)
  9/2 Andre Greipel (Paddy Power)
  9/1 Peter Sagan (William Hill)
10/1 Matt Goss (Paddy Power)
