Mark Cavendish is the world's best sprinter and he is the justifiable favourite to win Monday's stage of the 2011 Tour de France, which is likely to feature a sprint finish.

The 2011 Tour de France has featured high drama already, with Philippe Gilbert winning the opening stage and race favourite Alberto Contador losing time on his rivals due to a fall.

The second stage was a team time trial, which was won, as expected by the powerful Garmin-Cervélo team, leaving their two riders, Thor Hushovd and David Millar as the top two in the overall classification.

Today's stage, which runs from Olonne-sur-Mer to Redon, is the first that is likely to feature a bunch finish and that means it is also the first opportunity for British rider Mark Cavendish to assert his sprinting dominance over the rest of the peloton.

The Manx born cyclist won gold at the 2008 World Championships and then began dominating the sprint stages of the Tour de France, winning 15 stages in his last three appearances in the world's premier cycling event.

The 26-year-old has become the focus of his HTC-Highroad team and they're sole purpose in the 2011 Tour will be to give Cavendish opportunities to win stages and claim the green jersey. He is currently 17/10 with William Hill to finish the Tour as the top points scorer and 4/6, with the same firm, to begin his charge with a stage win in Redon today. Both of those look like bets worth taking.

Recommendation

Stage 3 Winner - Mark Cavendish (4/6, William Hill)
Green Jersey Winner - Mark Cavendish (17/10, William Hill)
