Mark Cavendish won the green points jersey at the Tour de France and is now looking for more glory on Sunday

British sprinter Mark Cavendish is 9/2 with Sky Bet to win the men's elite road race at the World Cycling Championships on Sunday.

Manx rider Cavendish has already won the green points jersey at the Tour de France and Tour of Britain this season and will be desperate to end the season with the world crown.

Great Britain has already enjoyed considerable success at the championships with six medals won so far, including gold for Lucy Garner in the junior women's road race and silver for Team Sky's Bradley Wiggins in the elite

Belgian hopes will be with 4/1 favourite Philippe Gilbert who has enjoyed a fantastic year with stage wins in all the Grand Tours as well as several victories in key classic races too.

Cavendish's perennial rival and reigning champion Thor Hushovd is available at 6/1 to take home the rainbow jersey for Norway and Peter Sagan is also a 6/1 hope for Slovakia.

Sky Bet's Jonathan Witty told Bettingpro: "It could be a tough task for Cavendish as it is an uphill finish in Copenhagen, but the British team will prioritise a win for him and will be working hard to ensure he is well placed."

He added: "If everything goes to plan, Cavendish will be perfectly positioned and his blistering pace could see the road race rainbow jersey coming back to Britain for the first time since Tom Simpson won in 1965."
