Zimbabwe v Pakistan 1st T20I preview and live streaming from Harare

The first of the two T20Is between Zimbabwe and Pakistan will be played on Friday at the Harare Sports Club in Harare.

Pakistan go into the game having won everything on tour so far; a Test and three ODIs. And in a format that is more fortune-based than any other, they have shown remarkable consistency by getting to the semi-finals of all the three World T20I Cups. Add that to the two finals appearance and one tournament win and you would probably be looking at the favourite in this game.

Pakistan are 1/5 at Stan James to Zimbabwe’s 3/1 at Stan James.

After their win over Bangladesh, Zimbabwe were expected to put up a lot better show than they have so far against an inexperienced Pakistani side. Barring the likes of captain Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan, and off-spinner Saeed Ajmal, the rest of the side is relatively new and the ease with they have been able to win the games against Zimbabwe after the initial two days of the Test is both a pleasant surprise and a pointer towards the gulf between Zimbabwe and the teams above them.

The T20Is could be a lot closer though. It is a format that allows teams like Zimbabwe to match up to the more experienced sides. Not that Zimbabwe have a record that is any greater in this format – in 11 games against the Test-playing sides, they have won only twice.

Interestingly, one of those two wins was against Australia four years ago, thanks to their current captain Brendan Taylor’s smashing innings of 60 in only 45 balls. Their other win against the West Indies was set up by the spinners as they managed to defend 105 on a track where Sulieman Benn had figures of 4/6 and Zimbabwe bowled 18 overs of spin.

The Harare track, on the other hand, will assist the medium pace bowlers as it has so far, and batting second would be a much better option. Pakistan should be favourites to make it four games in a row but Zimbabwe will back themselves to remain within touching distance of their opponents in this format.
