Western Australia rode on a Liam Davis century to beat Victoria Bushrangers by five wickets in a Sheffield Shield match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Chasing a difficult 362 for a win in the final innings, Western Australia resumed at 22/1. Davis found an able partner in Wes Robinson and the pair raised the visitors’ hopes with a 166-run stand for the second wicket.

Davis made 108 while Robinson was dismissed for 83.

Three quick wickets including that of the above pair and captain Marcus North raised the Victorian hopes but Adam Voges smashed a quickfire 76 (95 balls) to carry the attack to the opposition. By the time, he came back to the hut, Western Australia were only 44 runs short, with half their side remaining.

First innings’ lone half-centurion for the Western Australia side Travis Birt starred again in the end-game. He scored his second half-century of the game, an unbeaten 60, to guide the side home to a rollicking win that sent them to the second spot in the points table with 14 points from four games.

Earlier, Victoria had gained a first innings lead of 83 before they seemed to have out-batted the Western Australia through a second innings score of 278 all out. Half-centuries from Rob Quiney, Test-hopeful Matthew Wade and Glenn Maxwell propelled the side to an overall lead of 361. Unfortunately, it proved to be not enough.

Queensland are on 18 points from three wins in three games, while Victoria are now relegated to the third position with 12 from four.
