West Indies v India 1st T20 preview and tips at Port of Spain

More than two months after India lifted the cricket World Cup this year, they will play their first international game on their tour of the West Indies.

The two sides, India and West Indies will be involved in the first and the only T20 game that should ease them into the series to follow. The game will be played at Port-of-Spain on June 4 and will be a day game, starting at 10 am local time.

India (4/9 at BetFred), captained by Suresh Raina (4/1 at Stan James) for only the second time in international cricket will miss the services of most of those who were responsible for the World Cup win. There will be no MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag or Zaheer Khan, which will allow the fringe players a chance to impress in not only this T20 but also the ODIs that follow.

The bowling will still be better-served. Munaf Patel will lead the attack and vice-captain Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar will be the vital cogs in the bowling wheel. The presence of R Ashwin should keep Harbhajan honest but his inclusion will depend heavily on how the pitches will turn out. If the West Indians decide to go in with similar tracks to those that were prepared in the previous series against Pakistan, it will make sense for them to go in with a couple of slow bowlers.

West Indies (2/1 at Boylesports) have an almost unchanged squad from the one that beat Pakistan in the one-off game. Darren Sammy has come in for a lot of castigation for his role in the side but the man of the match performance in the Test match win against Pakistan should help his cause.

Lendl Simmons (7/2 at Coral) has improved vastly and the T20 format is clearly his favourite. With two half-centuries and an average of more than 30 in T20Is, his presence could be necessary balm to gloss over the absence of Chris Gayle.

The one player that many Indians could be interested in watching will be Devendra Bishoo, who made much more than just an impression in the Pakistani series with his leg-spin. How the Indians handle his leg-spin will be an exciting proposition.

The two sides, India and West Indies have played two T20Is in total and India have lost both. This will be a record that they will like to correct as quickly as possible.
