Sri Lanka play Pakistan in the third ODI of the five-match series on Wednesday at the RPS in Colombo.

It was a dramatic comeback by Sri Lanka (5/6 at Stan James) in the second game, as the batsmen finally came into their own, with a sterling performance with the bat. There was a century from Tillakaratne Dilshan (4/1 at Blue Square) and he batted through the innings after allowing the bowlers to dominate at the start.

The other smart move from the Sri Lankan management consisted of getting Upul Tharanga back to his rightful position at the top of the innings. He scored only 18 but that allowed the Lankans a much better base for the likes of Dinesh Chandimal and Mahela Jayawardene (4/1 at bet365).

The promotion also allowed Jayawardene to slip down to number five, where he smashed a 45-ball 53 and propelled Sri Lanka to 280.

In reply, up against a difficult total, Pakistan (11/10 at BetFred) capitulated with virtually no batsman bar Azhar Ali (4/1 at Blue Square) getting any start. Misbah-ul-Haq (5/1 at Blue Square) did score 27 but it was only Azhar’s 96 that kept Pakistan in hunt for a while. However, Thisara Perera’s six-wicket haul broke the Pakistani batting back and that now means that they have also not had an outstanding stint with the bat this tour.

Pakistan were hampered by the loss of Mohammad Sami, who missed out with a thumb injury. He had shown good form last two matches and his loss meant that the side went into the game with a debutant, Rahat Ali. Rahat was carted around for 34 in the only four overs he sent down and it now remains to be seen whether he will get another go here.

The worry for many Pakistani fans is the lack of batting depth in the order. Umar Akmal bats at five and despite all his talent, he has failed to get himself a consistent set of outings. At six, Shahid Afridi is a hit-or-miss batsman – more miss than hit – while wicket-keeper Sarfraz Ahmed at seven hasn’t done much of note in his career.

Sri Lanka found their batting mojo but it behoves them to continue those ways more consistently. Before their previous win, they head-to-head against Pakistan was 2-9 and they will need to do better than to get only going with the bat to reduce that deficit further.
