Sri Lanka v Australia 2nd T20I preview and tips from Pallekele

A Tillakaratne Dilshan century ensured that halfway through the first T20I between Sri Lanka and Australia, there was only one team was left with a realistic chance of winning the game.

Sri Lanka lead the series 1-0 and when the two sides meet for the second and the final T20I series at Pallekele, the home team will go into the game as favourites to clinch the series. Blue Square offers 10/11 for a Sri Lankan win, while Australia go in at 1/1 (SportingBet) to pull it back.

Interestingly, in the absence of Ajantha Mendis and Suraj Randiv, it was a virtually unknown Dilruwan Perera who shook the Australian middle-order in the first game with three wickets in his first three overs. On a pitch where no other bowler got the ball to turn, Perera got vicious spin from the pitch and the Aussie batsmen seemed taken aback.

Dilshan’s (11/4 at SkyBet) century apart, there were contributions from the likes of Kumar Sangakkara (4/1 at Blue Square) and Jeevan Mendis (12/1 at Coral), that helped the side get to the near-200 score. The pitch was more of a 160-wicket and the target was way above par. The lesson that Australia would have taken from the first game was an old one – partnerships are an absolute key to winning any game of cricket. The visitors’ best stand was of 39 runs but it was for the eighth wicket, by which time the game was all over bar the shouting.

Dave Warner (7/2 at Blue Square) was a saving grace with his half-century but none of the other top-order batsman crossed 12 in the first T20I. Cameron White’s (7/1 at Blue Square) form continued to flounder while David Hussey’s (6/1 at Boylesports) dismissal spoke of a man who hasn’t been playing too much competitive cricket.

Again, Steven Smith batted a number or two too high for six and Brad Haddin (12/1 at Stan James) could be given more opportunities at the top of the order.

Sri Lanka, interestingly, tried out Dinesh Chandimal (11/2 at BetFred) ahead of Sangakkara. While the experiment failed, if they are looking to build for the future, this could be the way they continue to go and allow Chandimal more opportunities to bat. In a way, this will also help the side have someone as experienced as Sangakkara manoeuvre the middle-order.

With the pitch expected to play in the same manner, the home side could go in as favourites for the second T20I as well.
