Sri Lanka v Australia 1st T20I preview and tips from Pallekele

The first T20I between Australia and Sri Lanka, also the first game on tour, will be played at Pallekele on Saturday. This is a part of the two-match T20I series, that will be followed by five ODIs and three Tests.

Australia (1/1 at SportingBet), led by Cameron White, have waited long for their first major series since the end of the World Cup. They did tour Bangladesh but wasted no time in disposing them off and will now look to start rebuilding. Michael Clarke has taken over both, the ODI and the Test team, with White appointed the T20 captain.

Sri Lanka (10/11 at SkyBet) has also undergone a chance since the end of the World Cup, although they toured England in a full-fledged series. The English tour did not go as planned for the Lankans, as they lost both, the Test and the ODI series, although they won the T20I. Tillakaratne Dilshan is their new captain and after some baptism by fire on his first tour, both as a captain and as a batsman – he was hit on his thumb and had it fractured – he will look to get back to winning at home.

The Australian squad of 13 for the T20Is is on expected lines. Brad Haddin makes his way back after missing the T20Is against England even as the likes of John Hastings and Aaron Finch look to cement their places in this shortest format of the game.

Of the seniors, White’s (7/1 at Blue Square) form has led to his ouster from the ODIs and a couple of aggressive knocks wouldn’t do him too much harm. David Hussey (11/2 at Boylesports) could be the one to watch out for given his aptitude to bat on the slower surfaces. Shane Watson (3/1 at SkyBet) has been made the new vice-captain across all three formats and he will open the innings. Interestingly, there are three others who can partner him at the top of the innings; Haddin, Shaun Marsh and David Warner.

The Australian bowling will comprise of three pace bowlers, apart from Watson and two spinning all-rounders. Steven Smith, who lost his place in Test match cricket, will have much to prove in these two T20Is.

Sri Lanka will also see Angelo Mathews (8/1 at SkyBet) take over the vice-captain to Dilshan (10/3 at Blue Square). Rather surprisingly, it is a 16-man squad for the T20Is, with only Shaminda Eranga as an uncapped player. He may not get a chance given the queue for places is rather long.

Mahela Jayawardene (10/3 at Boylesports) has rather enjoyed his stint as the opening batsman and will start off with Dilshan, while Kumar Sangakkara (10/3 at Blue Square) and Mathews will follow them down the order. Chamara Silva has been brought back and he may get his chance as well, with at least one of Jeevan Mathews or Dinesh Chandimal batting in the top-order.

There are three Lankan spinners in the squad, of which Suraj Randiv should make it to the playing eleven; one of Ajantha Mendis or Rangana Herath will partner him. With Lasith Malinga out of the series because of injury, Suranga Lakmal and Nuwan Kulasekera will share the new ball.
