It’s been one-way traffic in the series so far and the win in the third ODI won the South African (8/13 at SportingBet) side the ODI series. They were without Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla and looked like in early trouble chasing a substantial target but were rescued by their captain AB de Villiers.

The early damage was done by Faff du Plessis (11/2 at bet365), who made 72 and despite his untimely demise, the South African side got the better of rains and Duckworth-Lewis system for a change.

Sri Lanka (13/8 at BetFred) could easily blame their ill-fortune but truth be told, it is often the brave who wins. And right throughout the series it is the home team who have been braver of the two sides – they were bold to rest their top-notch players from the playing 11 and give their youngsters a go.

Du Plessis also starred in the field with a superb direct-hit run-out that meant that he was awarded the man of the match.

Earlier, Sri Lanka had gone on to get to a competitive 266 in their 50 overs but at 183/3 in 35.4 overs, they would have fancied themselves to get 300. A late collapse found them short of that imposing and potentially match-winning total.

They will take heart from the fact that five of the top six batsmen managed to get 30 plus scores, but a tad upset that only one of them made more than 40. The sense of self-pity will be an easy path to take for captain Dilshan (4/1 at bet365) as he said, “"Everything is coming against us. We had a good chance to win this one-dayer but we can't control the rain,” but he would do well to remember that when the rain came down, South Africa were only 88 short of the target with 16 remaining overs.

AB de Villiers, in his first international series as a captain was pleased with the third win and said, “We showed a lot of maturity, and a lot of young guys that came in showed experience. We didn't expect it to be 3-nil but we are very happy that it is.”

This could be a good chance for the management to rest one of the quicker men and get in Vernon Philander. Philander has been the star of the side in the longer format and he will be itching to get a chance in the ODIs as well. Sri Lanka could go into the fourth game with an unchanged line-up.

The South Africa v Sri Lanka fourth ODI will begin at 12.30 pm GMT on January 20.
