First, the good news for Sri Lanka. They cannot go worse than what they did at Paarl in the first ODI. The bowlers were thrashed around for 300 runs. And then the batsmen threw the proverbial white handkerchief against the South African pace bowlers by being bowled out for 43 in reply.

A record-breaking 258-run loss resulted for the visitors. One will like to think that things can only improve from here.

The bad news is that the batting woes are of perennial nature. Time and again, the batsmen have failed to adapt to conditions that change to unfamiliar and while this was an extreme case of shoddy batting, one could see it coming.

Things will not get any easier for Sri Lanka (4/11 at Coral) and the pressure on captain Tillakaratne Dilshan will be immense. He was one of the two at the top of the innings to get out for a duck in that game and it follows an abysmal time with the bat for him since he took over as the captain. Since the end of the World Cup in April last year, Dilshan (4/1 at BetFred) averages 16 as a batsman in 17 ODIs – pathetic by any stretch.

Lasith Malinga was the one positive to emerge out of that lop-sided defeat, as he went on to pick up five wickets. To be fair to the rest of the bowlers, it was always a good, true batting surface and a 250-plus score was always on cards. They struggled to adjust early but came back strongly to restrict the home team to 300.

Hashim Amla (10/3 at Stan James) regained his touch with a superb century, while Jacques Kallis did his chances of playing in the 2015 World Cup, as he wishes to do, no harm with his 72. AB de Villiers’ first game as a full-time captain saw him get to a half-century but nothing would have pleased him more than the comprehensive nature of the win.

Man-of-the-match Morne Morkel grabbed four wickets in the game for just 10 runs and he will continue to torment the batsmen with the steep bounce that he gets. Lonwabo Tsotsobe, who last played an international around two and a half months ago, got three to his tally as well and if Dale Steyn gets going in the second game, things may not get rosier for Sri Lanka any time soon.

South Africa (5/2 at Ladbrokes) will be favourites to trample over their opponents. Sri Lanka will take solace from the fact that it is a day game and chasing will be easier than what it was at Paarl.

The South Africa v Sri Lanka 2nd ODI at East London will begin at 8.00 am GMT on January 14.
