Chasing 310 for a win, Australia had looked down and almost out at the tea interval when they had lost all three of their mainstream batsmen and still needed 95 to win the match. Michael Clarke did not last too long, bowled off Vernon Philander, Ricky Ponting bottom-edged a ball to the slips and Michael Hussey stay at the crease was stalled for 39. It was the post-tea session that went Australia’s way when the two under-fire men, Brad Haddin and Mitchell Johnson ran amuck in the South African bowlers. Runs were clattered at an alarming pace and Haddin went on to get to a half-century after being criticised for his batting in recent times. While Haddin was sent back for 55, and Peter Siddle soon followed, Johnson and Patrick Cummins added requisite 18 runs for the ninth wicket to win the game. Earlier, Australia had begun the day needing 168 to win the match and all eyes were on Ponting. However, Ponting’s quest for a century was ended by a poor cut shot that he attempted off Morkel – it only went as far as the slip. Cummins’ six-wicket haul won him the man of the match award while Philander was the man of the series. The win allowed Australia to level the series 1-1 and will now go back home to take on New Zealand. South Africa await the arrival of Sri Lanka.
