South Africa v Australia cricket live and preview 2nd Test

A lot will depend on Clarke and Ponting if Australia have to turn things around in the second Test (credit: Lee Warren/Gallo Images/Getty Images)

Down 0-1 and with the series on line, Australia need to win the second Test match against South Africa at the Wanderers at Johannesburg.

Another loss in the second Test and the knives will be out against Michael Clarke’s captaincy and the team as a whole.

The first Test match seemed to be going as per script for the improving Australian side when they grabbed a near-200 run lead in the first innings. Then there was a twist. Within a few minutes of starting their second innings, Australia was staring at the record for the lowest Test match total. That ignominy was avoided but a total of 47 and a resounding defeat that followed was enough for the critics to throw the barbs at the team again.

Shaun Marsh’s injury will not help matters obviously. Since making his debut in Sri Lanka, he seemed to be on his way to establishing himself at the number three position. Now, Usman Khawaja (7/1 at Blue Square) should be in line for his fourth Test match appearance even as the think-tank juggles with the idea of pushing Ricky Ponting (4/1 at SportingBet) back to the number three spot.

Australia did a decent job of getting South Africa out for 96 in the first innings of that Test match but even then, Mitchell Johnson’s 0/26 from five overs stood out. In the second innings, he conceded 61 from his 11 and while he got a belated wicket of Hashim Amla (7/2 at Blue Square), his place in the side could be in jeopardy. Exciting young talent and rather quick Patrick Cummins could be in line to become Australia’s second-youngest Test debutant.

Despite the win, South Africa will know that they did a Houdini’s act. They were poor with the bat in the first innings but in conditions more suited to batting, Graeme Smith (9/2 at Coral) and Amla got to respective centuries. It was the captain’s first hundred in one year.

Jacques Rudolph’s return to Test match cricket was below par but it could be the case of nerves. He got starts (18 and 14) but sadly for him, failed to convert on both occasions and with Alviro Petersen’s good first class form breathing down his neck, could be under a bit of a pressure.

The bowling did a good job but the standout performer was Vernon Philander. It was a bit of a surprise to the Lonwabo Tsotsobe when he was dropped from the side, but Philander more than made up for it with his eight-wicket haul. It will be interesting to see if the Wanderers pitch can offer him the same kind of assistance as Newlands for him and the other pace bowlers.

That said, Wanderers does seem to be a result-oriented pitch with all of the previous ten Test matches here being decided in one or the other team’s favour. South Africa have won and lost five at this ground. It is therefore a surprise that a drawn game (7/5 at bet365) is the favourite among bookies to a South African win (15/8 at SportingBet) and a Australian win (11/4 at SportingBet).
