Tendulkar, who was batting on 67 at the end of the third day’s play against West Indies, moved quickly to the century that he needed to become the first ever batsman to get to the record 100 centuries in international cricket.

However, when on 94, he played away from his body to a delivery outside the off-stump from Ravi Rampaul and only managed to offer Darren Sammy a simple catch in the slips.

Earlier in the day, Tendulkar got moving immediately after resumption on the fourth day, hitting a boundary in the very first over of the day. He followed it up with a flick and a straight drive before he got into the 90s by upper-cutting Fidel Edwards for his second six in the innings. Tendulkar’s first six had come in the same way on the third day off the same bowler.

Tendulkar had earlier got to his 99th international century in March 2011, during the World Cup against South Africa. Since then, he has played in four ODIs and seven Test matches and is yet to get to the landmark. His 94 today is the tenth time in Tests that he has been dismissed in the 90s.

India had lost an early wicket when VVS Laxman edged the first ball he played on the day from Edwards to the slip. When Tendulkar got out, India needed 69 to save the follow-on.
