Royal Challengers Bangalore will play the final of the Champions League T20 at Chennai against the winner of the game between Somerset and Mumbai Indians. Mumbai Indians will take on Somerset in the second semi-finals today at Chennai.

Bangalore have now dispatched two Australian sides out of the tournament. In a virtual quarter-final against the South Australian Redbacks, they chased down 215 needed for a win thanks to 70s from Tillakaratne Dilshan and Virat Kohli.

Then, in the first semi-final, also played at home, they needed to get to 204 against a far superior bowling attack in New South Wales. This time, it was the combination of Chris Gayle and Kohli who smashed their way through with nine balls to spare. Kohli won his second successive man of the match award.

Where the Royal Challengers Bangalore may face a challenge in the final is to adapt to the track at Chennai. Unlike the one at Bangalore which seemed to be made by a construction firm in charge of building a national highway than a curator, Chennai may not offer as much leeway to the batsmen. Playing through the line will be difficult, especially for the stroke-makers of the class of Dilshan, Gayle and Kohli.

And has been proved time and again this tournament, Bangalore have a soft middle-order; none of Saurabh Tiwary, Mayank Agarwal or Mohammad Kaif have done anything of note in the Champions League T20 this year. Couple that with the poor bowling effort – arguably on the best batting pitch of the tournament – and the opposition, whether Mumbai or Somerset, could have a chance at breaking the Bangalore stronghold.

Of course, throughout the tournament, it is evident that the 8.00 o’clock games are higher-scoring at Chennai than the ones that begin earlier. That will be the one advantage that Bangalore batsmen may extract from the pitch.

Bangalore’s best bowler is Danie Vettori, with an economy of less than seven. All the remaining bowlers have struggled; Syed Mohammad (economy of almost eight), Raju Bhatkal (@9.25), Dirk Nannes (@10.42) and Sreenath Aravind (@11.4). This will be a chink that the opposition will look to convert into a crater.

Royal Challengers Bangalore are 9/4 (Bwin) favourites to win the Champions League T20 this year. The remaining two sides, Mumbai Indians (3/1 at Blue Square) and Somerset (4/1 at Ladbrokes) play each other in the semi-finals of the Champions League T20 tonight.
