Respected cricket writer and commentator, Peter Roebuck died in South Africa. He was 55. 

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, he was found dead at the Southern Sun Hotel Newlands in Cape Town.

Roebuck, who was covering Australia’s ongoing tour of South Africa was a columnist for Cricinfo and some of the newspapers around. He was also covering the tour for the ABC as a radio commentator and it was reported that the police had had a word with him Saturday night after he came back from dinner. 

Roebuck used to cover cricket for Australia and when they were not playing, he would stay in South Africa or Sydney. He played in 335 first-class matches and scored 17,558 runs at 37.27, with 33 centuries. He was the captain of the Somerset side which had Joel Garner, Viv Richards and Ian Botham but a long-standing spat with them saw their ouster. 

Roebuck has written an autobiography named, ‘Sometimes I Forgot To Laugh’.

The cause of Roebuck’s death has not yet been revealed.
