The series is tied at one game apiece, with Pakistan capping an easy first ODI win and Sri Lanka coming back to edge out the opposition in the second.

With Sri Lanka’s batting finally managing to click in the second ODI, they will be a tad more confident than after being bowled out for 131 in the first. Of course, in recent times, the batting has been up and down for Sri Lanka that makes prediction difficult – especially for a side that has struggled against the Pakistani spinners.

Speaking of the Pakistani spinners, they have sent down almost 54 overs in the two games and conceded only 190 runs and scalped 12 wickets. Shahid Afridi (14/1 at Stan James) was the man of the match in the first game and along with Mohammad Hafeez (7/2 at SportingBet) in the second, was the pick of the Pakistani bowlers. What has been a surprise so far is the non-inclusion of Junaid Khan, who had had a good Test series. His incision could be a handy tool.

The target of 236 wasn’t a difficult one to chase as Pakistan showed towards the end of their innings in the second ODI. But with loss of two wickets in the first over of their innings itself, they were always behind the eight ball and went down. Lasith Malinga was the bowler and he will continue to remain the danger-man for the Pakistani batsmen.

After a good first couple of Tests in which he averaged 90 (albeit because of a couple not-outs), Hafeez has found the going tough in the next four innings. The tapering off has been acute, and he has scored only 28 runs in the following four innings. While he is in no danger of losing his place in the side yet, the worry is that it could start affecting his bowling as well. The team will expect a few from his bat today.

The good news for Sri Lanka is the fifty from Mahela Jayawardene (4/1 at SportingBet) in the second ODI and the form of Upul Tharanga (4/1 at BetFred) in the series. Kumar Sangakkara (7/2 at Stan James) is due to get some runs given his good form overall, while Angelo Mathews, who cannot bowl because of his back problems, will do well to score more than he currently is – his last nine ODI innings have yielded only 220 runs.

SportingBet offers 5/6 for a Pakistani win, ahead of Sri Lanka (11/10 at bet365). With the confidence back, my money will be on the visitors going 2-1 ahead.
