Pakistan won the third match of the series to go 2-1 up after the two teams had shared the first two games. Despite a late collapse, Pakistan did enough to get to their score of 257 as they managed to bowl Sri Lanka out for 236, seven balls before the stipulated 50 overs.

If it was Mohammad Hafeez and Imran Farhat with the bat, then Umar Gul and Saeed Ajmal took the bowling honours in the game to push Pakistan to a 2-1 lead over their Asian counterparts.

Sri Lanka now need to win the fourth ODI to stay alive in the series. They seemed to have done most things right in the previous game but lacked the finishing punch. First they bowled with great heart to restrict Pakistan to 257 after they had got off to 151 without loss in the 30th over.

Then, Sri Lanka themselves seemed to have done well to get to 111/1 in 23 overs and 186/4 in 39 but collapsed to the off-spin of Ajmal.

The Pakistani spinners continue to act as the Sri Lankan scourge as only 113 runs came from their 27 overs but also had six wickets falling to their slow bowling. On the other hand, Sri Lanka’s premier bowler, Lasith Malinga bagged a couple of wickets but went for 57 off his 10 overs – they either need more wickets at the top from him or lesser runs conceded off him.

Pakistan seem to have done most things right this series. The cornerstone of their success continues to be their spin attack but credit must be given to the way they have batted as a unit – something that has rarely been seen from a Pakistani side of the recent past. Different batsmen have put their hands up in the course of the series and led them to more than reasonable scores, even as the Sri Lankan batting has looked feeble.

Tillakaratne Dilshan’s 64 and Kumar Sangakkara’s 45 were the standout performances from the third ODI but the form is too patchy for the Sri Lankan batters for them to pose a real challenge. The youngsters in the side, like Dinesh Chandimal and Jeevan Mendis will need their time under the sun before they can be expected to take up the gauntlet – and with the seniors showing average form in the year gone by, things are looking tough for the visitors.

Pakistan will be favourites again (8/11 at BetFred) with Sri Lanka at 11/10 (Boylesports) to make it 2-2.
