Past Record:
Pakistan (10/11 at Blue Square) have had the happier of the times in the series so far. The won the second Test match after having had the better of the first Test and it was only in the third match that Sri Lanka finally managed to compete. By that time, the series had already been lost and to further drill the nail in the coffin, it even rained at Sharjah that put paid to their chances.

The last time the two sides played an ODI was in this year’s World Cup, which Pakistan went on to win by 11 runs.

Sri Lanka is 1/1 (Paddy Power) to win their first game of the tour.

Team News:
Kumar Sangakkara (7/2 at Stan James) was the standout performer for Sri Lanka in the Test series but captain’s Tillakaratne Dilshan’s 92 in the previous Test match had vestiges of his former self. The one worry for Sri Lanka is Mahela Jayawardene and he could well be advised to bat like how Dilshan did in course of his 92 – aggressive from the word go.

Sri Lanka will be buoyed by the presence of Lasith Malinga, whose incision should convert the side’s bowling from average to excellent. Dammika Prasad could have been an asset given his extra pace but he is injured and will be replaced by all-rounder Thisara Perera.

The biggest news from the Pakistani selection was the inclusion of all-rounder Shahid Afridi (10/1 at Boylesports). Afridi, who had retired from cricket, after a spat with the former coach Waqar Younis and the PCB chairman, Ejaz Butt, could well lead the bowling on the slow and low pitches in the Middle East.

Afridi aside, Umar Akmal also gets selected after he was dropped for the Test matches, as does Abdul Razzaq, who had missed the series in Zimbabwe and the Tests.

Captain Misbah-ul-Haq could have some headaches in selecting the 11 from the 16-member squad, especially when it comes to the bowling department. Logic says that Afridi and Mohammad Hafeez (7/2 at Blue Square) aside, the pitches demand a specialist spinner, but Sri Lanka play the slow bowlers much better than the quicker likes of Umar Gul and Junaid Khan.

Razzaq could be the third seamer while one of Saeed Ajmal or Abdur Rehman will share the spinning duties one feels.

Players to look out for
Dinesh Chandimal (11/2 at SportingBet) gets another look-in after he had been let go off and the youngster has enough talent to get himself a big one. While all eyes will be on Afridi, I will be most interested in watching Misbah crank up from his first-gear batting in the Tests to whatever is required in the situation.

Prediction:
Pakistan go in as favourites with Hafeez to bat through for a long one.
