Australia Big Bash League T20: Mitchell Johnson says no to Big Bash League

Mitchell Johnson has passed the offer to play in the Australian Big Bash League T20, instead deciding to focus on the international cricket.

Australia tour Sri Lanka later in August and follow it up with the tour of South Africa and have a hectic summer back home with a series against India and New Zealand. With so much cricket to be played, Johnson has said that he would prefer trying to get into the best shape possible to lead the Australian bowling attack.

Johnson hasn’t had the best of the last two years and averages almost 35 against England, India and Pakistan. He said that he was approached by Perth Scorchers, but he had decided to not participate in the Big Bash League. Johnson said, “With India coming over, they're obviously a strong side, and it might give me a chance also to go back to grade cricket if the opportunity's there. We've got a big summer coming up, Sri Lanka first, then South Africa, they're going to be big Tests for us in their home towns, and a big summer here, so that's where my main focus is.”

Johnson has never taken part in the Indian Premier League either, along with his Test match captain Michael Clarke, both of whom have declined to give up on their recuperation during the months of April and May.

Ricky Ponting has, however, agreed to turn up for the Hobart Hurricanes after he decided to retire from international T20 cricket and ended his IPL contract with the Kolkata Knight Riders.

There is a good chance that the Australian selectors will use the Big Bash League T20 as a feeder to select the squad for the World T20 Cup which will be played in the first half of next year. Australia are 5/1 (Paddy Power) to win the World T20 Cup 2012, second to India, who go in at 4/1 (Blue Square). Sri Lanka, who will host the World T20, will be 5/1 (SkyBet), while defending champions England are at 6/1 (Stan James) to make it two in a row.
