Perth (6/5 at SportingBet) have shown great resilience in bouncing back after their first match defeat to Hobart. In that opener at home, the side had failed to chase down 141 needed for a win and were bowled out for a measly 109.

However, since then, they have chased down a whopping 189 needed for a win against Melbourne Renegades and then beaten Brisbane Heat by 10 runs in their next two games. With two wins from three games, Perth are currently joint-second in the points table – next only to Hobart who have four wins.

Melbourne Stars (8/11 at Blue Square) have played three and won only one. After Dave Warner mauled them in their first game against Sydney Thunder, they managed to eke out an eight-run victory over Heat. And then they fell short of Sixers’ score of 166 by a couple of runs in their third match, leaving them with no option but to win this match or face the prospect of an early elimination.

Interestingly for Perth, none of the batsmen have really got going so far. There was this one unbeaten 99 from Shaun Marsh’s blade but he left for national duties and only Herschelle Gibbs (7/2 at Ladbrokes) got to a half-century apart from that. Again, barring Gibbs’ 154, none of the other batsmen who have played a couple of games this tournament have a strike-rate of more than 121.

If batting is a bit of a concern from the Scorchers, then Michael Beer and Brad Hogg possess an economy of 5.9 and 6.8 to alleviate a bit of that. Both left-arm spinners have controlled the opposition well even as the others went for aplenty.

Given Cameron White’s (7/1 at Ladbrokes) poor run of form, they look like a batsman short in the middle order. Rob Quiney’s batting at the top of the order and David Hussey’s consistent run of form in the middle have bailed them out of any trouble but very soon the captain will need to start scoring some runs if they have to go all the way.

The fans have an added attraction to follow Melbourne Stars, their leg-spinning legend Shane Warne. His comeback to Australian cricket wasn’t good after Warner took him apart for runs, but he came back well in the remaining two games – restricting the batsmen. His battle against Gibbs could be an interesting given the South African batsman’s penchant to go after the bowling.

The Melbourne Stars v Perth Scorchers Big Bash League game will begin at 8.00 am GMT on January 4.
